Former President Donald Trump was safe after what the Federal Bureau of Investigation called an apparent assassination attempt on Sunday at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
During an afternoon press conference, law enforcement officials said that the gunman was hiding in shrubbery near the property line of the golf course, when Secret Service agents spotted a firearm muzzle sticking out of the fence.
The agents engaged the individual and shots were fired around 1:30 P.M. The gunman dropped the AK-47 style rifle with a scope, along with two backpacks and a GoPro camera, and fled in a black Nissan SUV.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that it had stopped a vehicle on northbound Interstate 95 after authorities in nearby Palm Beach County put out a “be on the lookout” alert and taken a suspect into custody.
Palm Beach County sheriff Ric Bradshaw said that a witness had managed to take pictures of the gunman and the car.
“We have somebody in custody right now,” added Bradshaw.
Just two months ago, Trump’s ear was grazed by a bullet during an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The failed assassination attempt, the first shooting of a U.S. president or a major party candidate in over four decades, prompted the resignation of Kimberly Cheatle as Secret Service Director.
Vice President Kamala Harris said in a post on X that she had been briefed about the incident, adding that she was “glad he is safe.”
In a post on X, Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C, said he “just spoke with President Trump” and that he’s in “good spirits.”
“Former President Donald Trump is safe and unharmed following a protective incident shortly before 2 P.M. Sunday at Trump International Golf Club at West Palm Beach. Secret Service personnel opened fire on a gunman located near the property line and this matter is under investigation,” said Rafael Barros, Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Office
